The engineer also addresses abandonment of underground fuel storage tank. Removal is preferred, but abanonment in place is permitted. Abandoning underground tanks in place: remove all flammable or combustible liquid from the tank and from all connecting lines. Disconnect the suction, inlet, gage, and vent lines. Fill the tank completely with an inert solid material and cap remaining underground piping. See engineers letter regarding type of fill material to use because of the desire to minimize the lateral pressure on the front foundation wall.
